Elderly Cottage
Housing Opportunity
Centre County is part of the Elderly Cottage Housing Opportunity, a statewide initiative created by the Pennsylvania Association of Area Agencies on Aging, and Diana T Myers. Funds to place ECHO cottages around the state were applied for through the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) fund. The program has a goal of an ECHO home in every county in Pennsylvania. Centre County was part of PHASE II and plans to have its first cottage placed on a host home site by summer of 2025.
The idea is that an aging adult can live close to friends, family, and natural supports while living independently in their own home. The home is about ½ the length of a typical single-wide modular home, featuring one bedroom, and is placed on the property of a host home that can be occupied by friends or family. The home can be moved to another property once the aging adult no longer needs it.
The HOME Foundation is the Housing Partner and is responsible for setting up the home, maintaining it, and collecting rent in the amount of 30% of the aging adult's income. The Centre County Office on Aging identifies the adult and helps to coordinate services.
